A tale of two condensates: the odd ”Bose - Einstein” condensation of atomic Hydrogen

چکیده
The recent report of the observation of Bose-Einstein condensation in atomic Hydrogen, characterized by an ”anomalous” density spectrum, is shown to be in agreement with the prediction of the existence of two condensates for temperatures lower than a well defined temperature (which for Hydrogen is 105 μK ), based on the QED coherent interaction in a gas of ultracold atoms at a density n > n0 (n0 = ( 1 λ )3 , λ being the wave-length of the e.m. modes resonantly coupled to the Hydrogen atoms). Bose-Einstein Condensation in Dilute Atomic Gases
The material presented here consists of lecture notes written for a five two-hour sections course given during the 2004 edition of the Brazilian School on Statistical Mechanics. The topics covered are 1. Bose-Einstein condensation of trapped ideal gases; 2. Effective two-body interactions and exact results in the Gross-Pitaevski limit; 3. Atomic structure effects, including “Feshbach resonances...
متن کاملEntanglement of two-mode Bose-Einstein condensates
We investigate the entanglement characteristics of two general bimodal Bose-Einstein condensates—a pair of tunnel-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates and the atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate. We argue that the entanglement is only physically meaningful if the system is viewed as a bipartite system, where the subsystems are the two modes. The indistinguishibility of the particles in the cond...
متن کاملStability of atomic–molecular coherent states of hybrid Bose–Einstein condensates
We study the stability of coherent atomic–molecular states of hybrid Bose–Einstein condensates in the framework of the parametrically coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations with a weak ‘short-correlated’ noise, also taking into account the self-interaction effects described by the cubic nonlinearity. We show that the stationary states of the hybrid atomic–molecular condensates are much more robust ...
متن کاملKibble-Zurek scaling and its breakdown for spontaneous generation of Josephson vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates.
Atomic Bose-Einstein condensates confined to a dual-ring trap support Josephson vortices as topologically stable defects in the relative phase. We propose a test of the scaling laws for defect formation by quenching a Bose gas to degeneracy in this geometry. Stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii simulations reveal a -1/4 power-law scaling of defect number with quench time for fast quenches, consistent wi...
متن کاملQuasi 2D Bose-Einstein condensation in an optical lattice
We study the phase transition of a gas of Rb atoms to quantum degeneracy in the combined potential of a harmonically confining magnetic trap and the periodic potential of an optical lattice. For high optical lattice potentials we observe a significant change in the temperature dependency of the population of the ground state of the system. The experimental results are explained by the subsequen...
